VENOM (October 5, 2018)

In this plot hole-ridden thrill ride, a parasitic alien entity brought to Earth by a psychopathic billionaire (Riz Ahmed) takes root in disgraced, perpetually-grimy investigative TV journalist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) – who has apparently never heard of YouTube; dude, you have a camera in your pocket, a high profile and a free platform, get back to work! – and starts eating people and glorying in the coming invasion of his kind. But then he does an abrupt about-face, for no discernible reason, and decides he’s on humanity’s side, working to thwart the plans of his alien master, the massive and deadly Riot. Cue CGI battles galore. Also, Michelle Williams is there, as Eddie’s lawyer ex Anne, possibly with her own alien parasite, since that is the only way to explain what is going on with her hair. Most worthy of note is Anne’s new boyfriend, Dr. Dan (Reid Scott) – nicest guy in the world!

31/2 stars.
