An excellent historical romance! Nathaniel Emory, newly minted Baron Alford, grew up with an abusive wastrel father, now deceased, and a grandfather who tried to shield him from the worst despite being confined to a wheelchair. On his deathbed, Nathaniel’s grandfather reveals the existence and location of a blue diamond of rare and extraordinary value. Nathaniel subsequently poses as a gardener to search wealthy tin miner, Mr. Anderson’s, property in St Ives, and in doing so strikes up a friendship with the eldest daughter of the house, Clara. For her part, Clara misses the simple life her family had before her parents had pretensions of marrying her to a title, and begins to dream of a life with her gardener, Nathaniel, oblivious to the fact that he is a member of the very class she loathes. Will Nathaniel find the diamond and restore his family’s legacy? Will Clara forgive him for his deception? Of course. This is an HEA romance, after all. The story along the way though, is thoroughly engaging. — Megan Osmond
